Outside of the blockchain network, these contracts can be used to establish ownership of assets. Tokens can be used to represent units of value such as money, coins, digital assets and electricity, and can also be sent and received.

Bitcoin’s (BTC) price hit another all-time high at $69,000, while Ether (ETH) continued its long slog toward $5,000 after reaching a new high at $4,868 earlier on Wednesday. Recent drops have been caused by a combination of factors, Noble theorizes, from excitement about low-quality coins, to negative remarks from Elon Musk, to China’s recent crackdown on crypto services. The accumulated response made this sell off “all the more violent,” says Noble.

Plenty of altcoins have also taken a beating. Dogecoin erased the breakneck gains of the week and then some, nearly halving its price after a meteoric climb last weekend. XRP is down 35% week-over-week, Stellar is down 30% and Polkadot is down 25% since last week.
Even with its usual ups and downs, Bitcoin has mostly been on the rise following a drop under $30,000 in July.
