If the pool is the size of a bucket, even a few cupfuls in or out affect how much water is left, and therefore how much you pay for it. If the pool is the size of a lake, even thousands of cupfuls in or out have no measurable effect on the water level in the lake.

Many lesser-used cryptocurrencies can only be exchanged through private, peer-to-peer transfers, meaning they’re not very liquid and are hard to value relative to other currencies — both crypto- and fiat.
