(Bloomberg) -- For much of this year, rising inflation has been bad news for gold. Now it’s giving the metal a shot in the arm. Such volatility in crypto markets is nothing new. With no formal structure and countless competing exchanges, trading in the digital currency is still akin to settling out in the old American West. Earlier this month, decentralized finance platform Synthetify was forced to halt all trading due to a bug in the platform that provides pricing data. The same software responsible for Synthetify’s troubles was also blamed for a September Bitcoin crash.
“I know these things are super volatile, like some days they can go down 80%,” Humphrey Yang, the personal finance expert behind Humphrey Talks, previously told NextAdvisor. “But if you believe in the long-term potential of [Bitcoin], just don’t check on it. That’s the best thing you can do.”
But the hacks didn’t stop. In 2016, the DAO–a blockchain organization that was based on Ethereum–lost what was worth $50 million at the time, due to a technical error someone seized upon. Binance.US was founded in 2019 in response to regulations that impacted Binance’s business in the United States. U.S. regulators believed some of the crypto assets that Binance’s trading platform allowed a user to trade were essentially securities. A security is a category of financial products which includes stocks, bonds, and specialized derivatives like futures. Trading in securities in the United States requires extensive licensing. Rather than change its main exchange to suit U.S. regulations, Binance instead created a separate exchange for U.S. customers, called Binance.US.
Virtual currencies. Like fiat currency, virtual currencies such as Bitcoin, Litecoin, and Ether are intended as a medium of exchange that enables two parties to transact business. But there are important differences: No physical coins or bills. Virtual currencies exist only in computer code. Except for visual representation of Bitcoin and altcoins in advertising and displays, and coin-like tokens that may be produced for marketing purposes, there are no actual coins or bills. Not legal tender. Virtual currencies are not legal tender and are not issued or backed by a government. However, many virtual currencies, which are called convertible virtual currencies, can be redeemed for fiat currency on a number of exchanges. No regulation. Virtual currencies are not regulated by any government agency or authority. However, regulation is being considered, especially where virtual currencies function as securities when they’re used to raise capital and when traded on exchanges.

The fifth Anti-Money Laundering Directive from the European Union, for example, entails that crypto buying, selling and other operations must comply with certain guidelines in certain regions.
