Brex employees haven’t had to look hard for reminders of their startup’s ambition to reign supreme over the big corporate card companies: The Wi-Fi network password at one of its former offices used to be “BuyAmex.” But Brex is facing increasingly fierce competition, including from a two-year-old copycat named Ramp that’s catching up fast, according to financial information on both companies reviewed by The Information. While the recent price history suggests that a meaningful rebound is imminent, it is crucial to pay attention to Bitcoin’s interaction with the 50 four-hour moving average at $62,000. Any increase in selling pressure that leads to a break of the support level could invalidate the optimistic outlook.
In the case of cryptocurrencies, academia has barely scratched the surface with respect to identifying the determinants of their prices. For example, studies by Cheah and Fry (2015) and Corbet et al. (2018) claim that Bitcoin has no intrinsic value and that its price has persistently exhibited ‘bubble-like’ behaviour. Makarov and Schoar (2018) find that the prices of Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Ripple differ across exchanges for weeks. Outside of academia, the President of the United States recently tweeted that cryptocurrencies are based on “thin air”.1
