Like all cryptocurrencies, the majors are digital assets that secure and verify transactions using computer science and complex mathematics, known as cryptography. Unlike traditional (‘fiat’) currencies, they are not currently issued or backed by a central authority such as a government. Instead, they run across a network of computers and are underpinned by blockchain technology – a permanent record of transactions that cannot be altered without the consensus of the network.

Several other regulators, including from Hong Kong, Germany, Japan, Italy, and Thailand, followed with various warnings, with the Netherlands the latest to do so this week. Using data from a prominent blockchain research firm, Coinmetrics.io, we explore the relationship between prices, computing power (measured by the hashrate), and network (measured by the number of unique active users). We focus on five major mineable cryptocurrencies (i.e. Bitcoin, Ethereum, Monero, Litecoin, and Dash). In some of our test, we expand our data to include an additional 33 cryptocurrencies. Our sample period spans from 7 August 2015 to 25 January 2019.
A look at the recent charts shows that Safemoon has been on a downward trend since the start of November. Safemoon has also not been doing very well since its last all-time high around 21st April 2021. Despite a surge in mid-May, the next time Safemoon experienced bullish growth was the end of October.

The cryptocurrency’s price began to surge on Sunday night (7 November) as investors pumped the price from $62,319.98 at 8pm to $66,101.46 by 10am on Monday morning.
