I present a model of cryptocurrency price formation that endogenizes both the financial market for coins and the fee-based market for blockchain space. A cryptocurrency has two distinctive features: a price determined by the extent of its usage as money, and a blockchain structure that restricts settlement capacity. Limited settlement space creates competition between users of the currency, so speculative activity can crowd out monetary usage. This crowding-out undermines the ability of a cryptocurrency to act as a medium of payment, lowering its value. Higher speculative demand can reduce prices, contrary to standard economic models. Crowding-out also raises the riskiness of investing in cryptocurrency, explaining high observed price volatility. 05 November 2021 Refinancing cross-subsidies in the mortgage... At the end of 2017 and beginning of 2018, more people–especially those in the mainstream finance world–were paying attention to bitcoin and cryptocurrency trading. And in early January 2018, the Japanese exchange Coincheck disclosed a hack worth a whopping $534 million. This happened right around the time that bitcoin slipped from its peak value, and it certainly seemed to accelerate its drop.
Though both assets posted a quick recovery, the event has made a significant impact on the market. Bitcoin retraced by 7.4% a few hours after making a new all-time high at $67,000.
Dogecoin, founded in 2012 as a joke, has drawn widespread attention from high-profile personalities such as billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk and rapper Snoop Dogg.
And while the cryptocurrency has since dipped slightly on Tuesday afternoon, it is still up by a whopping 350% on Bitcoin’s price at 7 November 2020 after nearing the new $70,000 threshold.
