Additionally, there are a few ways in which customers can reduce the amount of fees they pay. If customers choose to pay trading fees with Binance’s native token, BNB, the fees will be reduced by 25%. The second way in which fees can be reduced is by referring friends to Binance. If a user pays fees with BNB and refers a friend, the most they will end up paying in trading fees is 0.06% for each trade. That is one of the best deals in all of crypto.

More importantly, we find that the ACP and ANET factors can price cryptocurrency returns. In particular, all of our five cryptocurrencies have positive and significant exposures to the fundamental factors. The explanatory power of ACP and ANET is over and above any effects related to the Bitcoin and momentum factors. This finding is non-trivial given that the five cryptocurrencies in our sample have consistently accounted for between 80% to 95% of the total cryptocurrency market capitalisation. Furthermore, we extend our factor analysis to an out-of-sample set of 33 cryptocurrencies obtained from the Bittrex exchange. We find that the aggregate computing power and network factors also price cryptocurrencies in this large out-of-sample data set.
But to understand the dynamic that led to this year’s depressing year for crypto, we actually should start a few years before 2018. In bitcoin’s early days, Mt. Gox was the go-to service for handling transactions. Then, in 2014, it halted transactions and slowly copped to a crypto-hack to the tune of $473 million, the biggest hack of its kind at the time, and it gave many people pause. Reconsider what you might be more comfortable with going forward, such as allocating less to crypto in the future or diversifying through crypto-related stocks and blockchain funds rather than directly buying crypto (though you should still expect volatility when cryptocurrency markets fluctuate).

The longer term relationship varies over time. After exhibiting strong positive correlation in 2013 (where prices rose), and 2014 (where prices fell for a sustained interval), the longer term relationship between Bitcoin and Litecoin starts to break down around the middle of 2015. It can be seen in the accompanying price plot that at this point the Bitcoin price starts to gradually recover, whereas the Litecoin price does not.
