With cryptocurrencies often moving in tandem with Bitcoin, Ethereum was trading up nearly 11% on the last seven days after hitting a new record high of almost $5,000 on Tuesday morning.
A cryptocurrency monetary policy is enforced through a unique blend of software, cryptography and financial incentives rather than the whim of trusted third parties such as central banks, corporations or governments. Cryptocurrencies are powered by cryptographically secure, verifiable transaction databases called blockchains, which provide their security and transparency.

Identifying the determinants of asset prices is one of the most important questions in finance. Developed in 2012 by Toronto-based programmer Vitalik Buterin, and backed by an initial $18 million crowdfund, Ether (ETH) is a cryptocurrency that underpins a blockchain network called Ethereum. While Bitcoin was designed to be a digital currency, Ethereum is a more general implementation of blockchain technology.
