Earlier this month, decentralized finance platform Synthetify was forced to halt all trading due to a bug in the platform that provides pricing data. The same software responsible for Synthetify’s troubles was also blamed for a September Bitcoin crash.
Binance may be the top choice for crypto traders across the world but it appears regulators are getting fed up. On June 27, 2021, the Financial Conduct Authority (the U.K.'s financial watchdog), banned Binance Markets Ltd., an affiliate of Binance, from operating in the United Kingdom. This is a stable coin, so it is pretty unique among other cryptocurrencies. Stable coins have the backing of fiat currencies such as the Euro or US dollar. This means that if an investor buys 1 Tether coin, they will have the same value of 1 fiat currency (backing the coin). Theoretically, what this means is that Tether will have a more stable value than other cryptocurrencies that suffer market volatility.

I present a model of cryptocurrency price formation that endogenizes both the financial market for coins and the fee-based market for blockchain space. A cryptocurrency has two distinctive features: a price determined by the extent of its usage as money, and a blockchain structure that restricts settlement capacity. Limited settlement space creates competition between users of the currency, so speculative activity can crowd out monetary usage. This crowding-out undermines the ability of a cryptocurrency to act as a medium of payment, lowering its value. Higher speculative demand can reduce prices, contrary to standard economic models. Crowding-out also raises the riskiness of investing in cryptocurrency, explaining high observed price volatility. 05 November 2021 Refinancing cross-subsidies in the mortgage...
