The difference between a digital currency and a cryptocurrency is that the latter is decentralised, meaning it is not issued or backed by a central authority such as a central bank or government. Instead, cryptocurrencies run across a network of computers. Digital currencies have all the characteristics of traditional currencies but exist only in the digital world. They are issued by a central authority.
Such volatility in crypto markets is nothing new. With no formal structure and countless competing exchanges, trading in the digital currency is still akin to settling out in the old American West. Earlier this month, decentralized finance platform Synthetify was forced to halt all trading due to a bug in the platform that provides pricing data. The same software responsible for Synthetify’s troubles was also blamed for a September Bitcoin crash.
Meanwhile, there has been plenty of speculation that bitcoin’s big rise may have been due to a pump-and-dump scheme. One theory that the U.S. Justice Department is reportedly looking into is that the digital coin Tether (which is supposedly pegged to the U.S. dollar to make for a less volatile cryptocurrency) was used to manipulate the bitcoin market and cause a large run-up in price. Bitcoin hit an all-time high of $68,530.34 early Tuesday, according to CoinMarketCap. That's just a few weeks after it hit a previous high of nearly $67,000 before sliding as much as 12%.
Just like you shouldn’t let a price drop influence your decision to buy crypto, don’t let a sudden price increase alter your long-term investment strategy. Even more importantly, don’t start buying more crypto just because the price is rising. Always make sure your financial bases are covered — from your retirement accounts to emergency savings — before putting any extra cash into a speculative asset like Bitcoin.
