Although cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin are virtual currencies, they are treated as an asset for capital gains tax purposes, and “ordinary” investors who purchase Bitcoin as an investment will experience a capital gain or loss when they exchange it for traditional currency, products, or services.

When Bitcoin’s price exploded in late 2017, so did the interest of the general public in cryptocurrencies. Internet searches for Bitcoin, cryptocurrencies, and crypto prices skyrocketed. Many people weren’t able to resist the fear of missing out on the massive gains the early adopters were experiencing as crypto prices rose quickly. When the inevitable correction came and crypto prices fell, those who bought towards the end of the bull run immediately saw the value of their holdings halved. Despair and anguish followed, but the enthusiasm of the crypto community hasn’t faltered.

Also, several businesses now receive bitcoin as payment for goods and services – another reason why it is a wise investment. For instance, Visa transacts with BTC, and in February, Tesla announced that the company has invested $1.5 billion in BTC and will also be accepting it as means of payment for its cars. Additionally, the large banks are already incorporating BTC transactions in their offers too.

While exact predictions are impossible, we asked five experts about what they’re paying attention to in the crypto space for the rest of 2021:
No intermediaries. Unlike fiat, virtual currency transactions are conducted directly between two parties, on a peer-to-peer basis, using a decentralized computer network that involves no banks or other intermediaries. Trust in the system is based on digital proof, or the ability of users to access a permanent record of all of the transactions that have taken place.

I present a model of cryptocurrency price formation that endogenizes both the financial market for coins and the fee-based market for blockchain space. A cryptocurrency has two distinctive features: a price determined by the extent of its usage as money, and a blockchain structure that restricts settlement capacity. Limited settlement space creates competition between users of the currency, so speculative activity can crowd out monetary usage. This crowding-out undermines the ability of a cryptocurrency to act as a medium of payment, lowering its value. Higher speculative demand can reduce prices, contrary to standard economic models. Crowding-out also raises the riskiness of investing in cryptocurrency, explaining high observed price volatility. 05 November 2021 Refinancing cross-subsidies in the mortgage... While paying for things in cryptocurrencies doesn’t make sense for most people right now, more retailers accepting payments might change that landscape in the future. It’ll likely be much longer before it’ll be a smart financial decision to spend Bitcoin on goods or services, but further institutional adoption could bring about more use-cases for everyday users, and in turn, have an impact on crypto prices. Nothing is guaranteed, but if you buy cryptocurrency as a long-term store of value, the more “real world” uses it has, the more likely demand and value will increase.
One example is the negative correlation that occurs between Ethereum and its associated factors around June 2016 (left facing arrows at the top and just left of the horizontal middle of the Ethereum scalograms). During this time interval, one of the most well-known applications at the time, the DAO, built on top of the Ethereum environment, was hacked. It can be seen that all factors are negatively correlated in the short term with the price during this time interval. As a result of the uncertainty generated by the hack, price dropped sharply, but activity on social media and interest increased (causing the negative correlation). The negative relationship can be seen during the 2–4 day band for all factors.
