Cryptocurrency is going mainstream — and becoming increasingly difficult for investors to ignore.
Popular cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum are built on blockchain technology. Blockchains like Bitcoin and Ethereum are constantly growing as new blocks are added to the chain, increasing the security of the ledger dramatically.

Fig 8(A) shows many significant positive correlations between Bitcoin and Litecoin. This is an expected relationship given Litecoin is technically very similar to Bitcoin (Litecoin is essentially Bitcoin with faster block confirmations). Overall, there is no clear leader in the relationship. However during the interval of the late 2013 price bubble (where Bitcoin and Litecoin reached around $1000 and $40 respectively) it can be seen that Bitcoin is leading Litecoin (slightly downward facing arrows across all periods).

Shroder will oversee the company’s strategy and execution, fundraising, business and corporate development as well as manage the firm's Legal, HR, and product and technology functions, says Binance.US. Brooks quit a month ago, citing "differences over strategic direction" at the cryptocurrency exchange, which has been dogged by regulatory issues around the world, with watchdogs in the UK, Japan, Hong Kong, Germany and Thailand among those to take action over AML and consumer protection concerns. In a statement, Shroder stresses that Binance.US has established itself as "regulatory compliant" as well as profitable, serving millions of customers. During nearly three years at Ant Group, Shroder focused on growing and expanding the company’s operations and global partnerships. Prior to Ant, he was head of strategy and business development for Uber in their Asia Pacific region. Shroder's brother Matt joined Binance in February 2020 as VP, global expansion operations. Cryptocurrencies are wholly digital, so there’s no physical coin or bill connected to the crypto you own. Instead, owners hold cryptocurrency in a digital wallet, and buy or sell through an online exchange. Your wallet may be online (some popular exchanges like Coinbase offer an in-app wallet) or stored offline on a hardware device similar to a USB drive.
There’s already been a major breakthrough on this front, with the first Bitcoin ETF recently making its debut on the New York Stock Exchange. The development represents a new and more conventional way to invest in crypto. The BITO Bitcoin ETF allows investors to buy in on cryptocurrency directly from traditional investment brokerages they may already have accounts with, like Fidelity or Vanguard.
Cryptocurrency transactions are recorded on a decentralized ledger. This ledger is called a blockchain. Every time crypto is bought or sold, the transaction is added to the blockchain — a public database of the transactions, which is available to other crypto holders. Anyone can join and participate in the blockchain, but data on individual transactions — and the people involved with them — are secured using cryptography (the basis for the term cryptocurrency). For each transaction added to the blockchain, there’s a digital validation process to verify it and prevent fraud.

But to understand the dynamic that led to this year’s depressing year for crypto, we actually should start a few years before 2018. In bitcoin’s early days, Mt. Gox was the go-to service for handling transactions. Then, in 2014, it halted transactions and slowly copped to a crypto-hack to the tune of $473 million, the biggest hack of its kind at the time, and it gave many people pause. But it was still early enough for people to believe that the blockchain system was still getting all the technical kinks out.
"For any centralized service, we have to do [client verification] and hold customer data," Zhao said. "On top of that we have to hold customer assets. Unlike banks, when the assets get stolen it's difficult to get them back. There's a high responsibility on the centralized exchanges we need to carry out well."

As of early 2021, the number of cryptocurrencies on Binance.US stood at just 53, while the original version of the platform supports over 200 different coins.
